• Those books are useful to get you started and are sometimes nice collectors items.

• Don't be surprised if your ears reveal extra notes, omissions or subtleties - these books are not always work of art though recently, quality has reached higher level.

• All of the following books are currently available in specialized stores. I've seen them all in my favorite music store here in Montreal. For all you guys go check at Steve Royall's in the UK in case you can't find them locally. • There is also Leo Brouwer's Variations on a Theme of Django Reinhardt (Nuage) . The transcription is available in good stores (I bought it in 2004).

• The most important aspect in that music style is the right hand technique - this is perfectly explained in Michael Horrowitz's Gipsy Picking method. Michael is coming with other great books that I consider state of the art in the field of gypsy jazz teaching. This is the only book I'm still looking at today for suggested exercises - the aspects explained in this book are fundamental to gain a proper technique to play this music - it explains how gypsies approach the guitar, something gadjo's hardly have access to. My personnal Gipsy Jazz lessons on right hand techniques are based on the concepts explained here. Everything produced by Horrowitz is top notch.

• For real good play along books check the Robin Nolan Trio series .

• "Astuces Manouche" Volume 1 & 2 - a broad approach to all aspect of gipsy jazz - a nice overview in an easy format. Angelo's playing is terrific but very hard to assimilate, almost impossible. Even when he played Dark Eyes at slow tempo he can't help but speeding it...dear Angelo - he rules.

• Colin's Cosimini's "Gypsy Jazz Chord Books" for contemporary chord charts to Gipsy Jazz standards. Interesting in some way since he brings to the mass the sometimes weird voicing gypsies like to use. If you play your favorites standards like in fake books you're ok - don't worry. Colin's book (and CDs if ordered with) are sometimes "imaginative".

• I would also recommend books and methods by Romane and Derek Sebastian.
