Leo Brouwer is a figure of considerable interest in the cflassical guitar world, although his concert performances in the UNited States have been rare. He is, of course, better known as a composer than as a player, and he has produced a number of contemporary masterpieces. The colorful, swirling La Espiral Eterna, composed in 1971, is already a standard work that most young guitarists have in their repertoires, and it has been recorded by several of them. Nearly as popular, but in an entirely different style, is the lively, folksy Elogio de la Danza, a work based on traditionnal Cuban dance rhythms. His set of Etudes Simples and Pièces sans titre are useful student scores - fairly easy, but in a contemporary idiom. Brouwer has also written a Guitar Concerto that mixes aleatoric (chance) elements with carefully and specifically notated sections. On a more whimsical note, Brouwer has composed duet arrangements of two Lenon -McCartney tunes, "The Fool on the Hill" and "Penny Lane" - arrangements that are sometimes clever, sometimes Muzak-like, and representative of neither Brouwer nor the Beatles, but a change of pace from what is usually considered as the norm.
